Don't Wake The Fish at Gurnard's Head

By WOCornwall West Briton  |  Fri 01 Apr 2016

Don't Wake The Fish, the chilled family-friendly weekend of music, arts, food and real ales returns to The Gurnard's Head, near St Ives, over the summer bank holiday weekend of May 27-29.

Run by, family-owned operator of award-winning inns, Eat Sleep Drink, DWTF was launched in 2012 to celebrate the renaissance of Cornish brewing. With new additions planned for 2016, it blossoms into a wider offering for the entire family, bringing together Cornish music, art and sustenance on lawns sandwiched between the spectacular backdrops of moorland and ocean.

New additions for 2016 to make the weekend bigger and better include an alliance with Shelterbox that will both house festival guests for the weekend in tents and raise money for the Helston-based disaster relief charity. There will be more things to keep families busy with a to hold the attention of the children and the works of local artists via The Newlyn Art Gallery's Makers' Market.

Kicking-off the weekend on the Friday will be the bar opening from 5pm in the garden with music from 7pm. The musical line up over the rest of the weekend will include some of the most talented West Country based bands including: The Oggymen, Martha Tilston, The Odd Folk, Native Oak, Ruarri Joseph, Sheelanagig , First Degree Burns, Company B, The Odd Folk who are favourites at Don't Wake The Fish and winner of Scottish Album of the Year 2015, Kathryn Joseph. DJ Noah will also take the party onto the early hours of Saturday and Sunday night.

2015 saw as many as 2,500 people attend DWTF and it's planned to cater for a similar number in 2016. Activities for children will be centred on the Little Urchins Tent where Cornwall Wildlife Trust will teach children about wildlife in West Cornwall and performance artists, The Story Republic, will entertain children with song and poetry, not to mention hat and mask making, Morris dancing, flower crown making and yoga with Leif Olsen. There will also be a colouring and soft play area available for toddlers.

Eat Sleep Drink's Field Kitchen will run a menu with seasonal modern British influence and Field to Fire will supply wood-fired pizzas while the Beer Tent will play host to around 70 ales from some of the South West's best breweries alongside a wine bar and full range of soft drinks.

This year, DWTF will be ticketed at reasonable prices starting from £10 for the Friday evening to ensure that it can be run on a sustainable basis and so that local artists and those who have previously been volunteers can be properly remunerated for their time. A share of proceeds from the ticket sales will be directed towards two local charities: Shelterbox and The Fisherman's Mission, Newlyn.

Entry will be by ticket only. Tickets are already available directly from The Gurnard's Head for advance purchase and will be available from online at www.eventbrite.co.uk. Ticket numbers will be limited each night.
