Bernard Evans, painter and teacher lived in Newlyn since 1976. He opened the Mounts Bay Art Centre with his wife Audrey and taught visiting students here for 25 years. He was actively involved with the Newlyn Society of Artists and served as Chairman throughout the 90’s.
Bernard exhibited his work across Cornwall, London and the USA. His paintings often featured the Newlyn Fish Market, harbour and the surrounding area.
The Newlyn Gallery Picture Room will be displaying an exhibition of Bernard’s work and life. You can pick up a trail sheet from here and discover more of Bernards work that will be on display around the village during the festival.
Bernard Evans was a familiar figure in Newlyn often seen during his lifetime sketching and painting in the early morning at the Newlyn fish market, by the quayside or perched on a high point over looking the village. He was well known and liked amongst the fishermen who often commissioned him to paint a picture of their boat or themselves working. Bernard liked to paint the every day working lives of the fishing community and was proud of his connection with them.
There will be an exhibition of Bernard's work at Newlyn Art Gallery during the festival and a 'Bernard Evans Trail' around the village.
